In the trial of a homeless man who was beaten to death, the Darmstadt Regional Court sentenced a 15-year-old to ten years in prison. It found the student guilty of base murder, robbery and grievous bodily harm. The convicted man received the maximum possible sentence under juvenile law.

In November 2023, the youth and his 18-year-old brother attacked a homeless man from Darmstadt, the district court described the course of events in its verdict. The homeless man was in a bus shelter on the central Luisenplatz at around 2:15 a.m.

Murder of homeless man: The older brother sleeps, the younger strikes

Videos from surveillance cameras played in court show how both brothers beat the man. The younger brother can also be seen taking items from the homeless man’s backpack. The younger brother apparently carried out the fatal blows alone. The older brother had already fallen asleep drunk on Luisenplatz at the time – and was found in the same condition. His sentence was: 60 hours of community service and ten interviews with the youth court services.

According to the court, the younger brother confessed to the crime. He listened to the verdict without expression. He was already known to the police for theft, physical assault and sexual assault on a 20-year-old, but had not yet been convicted. “You take what you want,” said presiding judge Marc Euler, referring to the crimes. “And at that moment you wanted to take a life.” The 15-year-old’s defense attorney is now considering whether to appeal.
