Terrorism: Slovakia: Fico assassination is classified as a terrorist act

The Slovakian Prime Minister is critically injured in an assassination attempt. The assassin now faces life imprisonment.

The assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico on May 15 is now considered a terrorist act in Slovakia instead of just an attempted murder. This change in the judiciary’s classification was announced by Attorney General Maros Zilinka on Thursday. This means that the assassin faces a life sentence in prison and public approval of the act can also be punished with imprisonment.

The left-wing populist head of government was critically injured by several shots fired by an opponent of the government when he stepped outside to wait for supporters after a government meeting in the small town of Handlova. The attacker, who was arrested immediately after the attack, is currently in custody. During police questioning, the 71-year-old justified his actions with hatred of Fico and his government policies, according to a court document obtained by dpa.

Government blames opposition for assassination

Fico’s life was in danger for several days after the attack. He is now home from the hospital and is preparing to resume his official duties soon. According to government sources, however, the attack has left permanent damage and Fico will be unable to walk without the help of crutches for some time to come.

In a video message to the people of Slovakia in June, Fico blamed the opposition for the assassination. He himself had warned for months that there was a threat of an assassination attempt on a government politician due to the hatred stirred up by the opposition and media close to it. After Fico’s election victory in autumn 2023, the opposition parties organised mass protests in which they denounced his government as a “mafia” and warned of a threat to democracy and the rule of law.
