New national coach: Hong Myung Bo will succeed Klinsmann in South Korea

Jürgen Klinsmann was South Korea’s national coach for just one year. After parting ways with the former national coach, the association has now found a new head coach.

Hong Myung Bo is the successor to former world champion Jürgen Klinsmann as South Korea’s national football coach. A spokesman for the Korean Football Association (KFA) confirmed that Hong had been appointed national coach. He did not provide any details. The 55-year-old, who is considered one of South Korea’s most successful players and who captained the national team to fourth place at the 2002 World Cup in his home country, is taking on the post for the second time after 2014.

The association parted ways with Klinsmann after the national team’s surprise defeat in the semi-finals of the Asian Cup against Jordan in February of this year. The former national coach had only taken over the post in South Korea a year earlier. For four qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup, the team was initially coached by two different interim coaches.

The national news agency Yonhap reported that Hong would lead the national team until the next Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia in 2027. It is unclear when exactly he will take over training of the national team. Hong was most recently coach of the local K-League team Ulsan HD FC, with whom he won the championship in 2022 and 2023.

He was national coach from 2013 to 2014. Hong resigned after the group stage elimination at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
