National Assembly election: Macron rejects Prime Minister Attal’s resignation for now

Prime Minister Attal wanted to draw conclusions from the new elections and resign. But President Macron has other plans for the time being.

Following the unexpected outcome of the parliamentary elections in France, President Emmanuel Macron has rejected Prime Minister Gabriel Attal’s request to resign for the time being. Macron asked him to remain prime minister for the time being in order to ensure the stability of the country, the Élysée Palace said.

The left-wing alliance had surprisingly won the new elections. The government camp of Attal and Macron lost its majority in the National Assembly and will probably become the second strongest force ahead of the right-wing nationalists of Marine Le Pen. None of the groups achieved an absolute majority, which makes forming a government difficult.

Attal announced his resignation on Sunday evening following the projections. However, it was already suspected that he could stay in office for a few more weeks to take care of day-to-day business – also with an eye on the Olympic Games, which begin on July 26 in Paris.
