Colombia dreams of a second title. In the semi-finals they beat Uruguay despite being outnumbered for half a game. Uruguay missed the chance to play against Argentina for the sole record victory.
Colombia, including former Bayern player James Rodríguez, won the Copa América semi-final and will face Argentina in the final. The Colombians beat Uruguay 1-0 (1-0) at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. They had to play the entire second half with ten men. “We made history that night,” said a visibly moved James Rodríguez after the final whistle.
Colombia thus retains the chance to win its second title – the last one was 23 years ago (2001). Uruguay, on the other hand, misses out on a direct duel against Argentina for the record victory, as both teams are currently record champions of the Copa América with 15 titles. La Celeste (The Sky Blues) will play Canada for third place on Saturday (local time). The final in Miami will take place on Sunday.
Colombia outnumbered from the second half
Things got exciting just before half-time: Jefferson Lerma headed in a beautiful cross to make it 1-0 in the 39th minute. Shortly afterwards, Colombia suffered a setback when Daniel Muñoz was sent off with a second yellow card.
The second half was initially characterised by many fouls and interruptions. With fewer players, Colombia increasingly retreated into their own half, while Uruguay applied increasing pressure. A shot that hit the post by Luis Suárez, who was only substituted on in the 66th minute, was just one of many chances. In the end, Colombia held on to their narrow lead until the end.
