Where do immigrants come from, how old are they and where do they live? A new database provides information on this. A city in Hesse is one of the most popular places to live nationwide.
Immigrants are significantly younger than the average German population. Demographic statements such as these are made possible by a new database based on the 2022 census, which the Federal Statistical Office has now made available online. The non-German population was on average 37 years old on the census date – May 15, 2022 – while the German population was on average 45 years old.
On the reference date, there were around 15.6 million people living in Germany who had immigrated to Germany. This corresponded to almost 19 percent of the German population.
40 percent have a German passport
At that time, 40 percent of them had German citizenship, while 60 percent had another nationality. The gender ratio among the immigrants is almost balanced: 49.7 percent were men and 50.3 percent were women.
Two and a half million minors
According to the definition, people have an immigration history if they themselves or both of their parents have immigrated to Germany. According to this calculation, the 15.6 million immigrants themselves are supplemented by 2.5 million under-19s.
Main country of origin: Poland
The majority of immigrants came from Poland (12 percent), Turkey (9 percent) and Russia (7 percent). Five percent each came from Syria and Ukraine.
Offenbach at the top nationwide
According to the survey, most immigrants – in relation to the total population – lived in Offenbach, Hesse, on the census date: the proportion here was 43 percent. Most of them came from Turkey, Poland and Romania. More than a third of immigrants also lived in Pforzheim (39 percent), Heilbronn (37 percent), Frankfurt am Main (36 percent) and Ingolstadt (33 percent).
