The Greens absolutely want basic child benefit, but Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) does not want to approve the money. Now the dispute is entering the next round.
Even after Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) rejected the idea of introducing a basic child benefit during this legislative period, the Greens are sticking to its plan to introduce it in 2025. “With the support of Family Minister Lisa Paus, we Greens in the Bundestag have put forward the proposal to introduce it in two stages,” deputy parliamentary group leader Andreas Audretsch told the Reuters news agency on Friday. The details are currently being negotiated between the SPD, Green and FDP parliamentary groups. “We will launch the basic child benefit in 2025,” said Audretsch.
Lindner had questioned the introduction in 2025 and pointed out that there was no need for further action with regard to state cash benefits for children. “We will continue the immediate child benefit and increase the child benefit. This is what needs to be done on the benefits side in this legislative period,” the FDP leader told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND). In addition, the Bundestag is still negotiating the so-called children’s opportunities portal, which is an information service. “It remains to be seen whether more can be done in this legislative period in terms of cooperation between the authorities.”
Financial basis for basic child benefit
Audretsch said that the children’s package in the agreement on the 2025 budget laid the financial foundation for the start of basic child benefit in the same year. “Three billion euros to improve the financial situation of families and children in a very concrete way, for all children. The money is secured, now it’s about the future structure.”
