War in the Middle East: UN representative reports terrible impressions in Gaza

After the Israeli attack on the military leader of Hamas, the local UN representative calls for protection for civilians. When visiting civilian victims, he saw horrific scenes

Following the Israeli air strike in the south of the Gaza Strip, UN representative Scott Anderson spoke of some of the most horrific scenes he has seen in the Gaza Strip in nine months. In the Khan Yunis hospital, which he visited, there are not enough beds, many patients are being treated on the floor and without adequate disinfection facilities, said the director of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in Gaza.

Desperate parents have told him they have moved to the humanitarian zone in the hope that their children will be safe there, Anderson said. He called for civilians to be protected at all times. A ceasefire is urgently needed and the hostages remaining in the Gaza Strip must be released.

On Saturday, the Israeli army attacked the leader of Hamas’ military wing, Mohammed Deif, in the Gaza Strip, killing dozens of other people. It was not immediately clear whether Deif was also killed or injured in the airstrike.

According to Palestinian sources, at least 90 people were killed in the Israeli military operation. At least 300 other people were injured in the humanitarian zone of Al-Mawasi, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority. This information could not initially be independently verified.

An Israeli military representative later admitted in a briefing that the object hit was located in the humanitarian zone declared by Israel west of Khan Yunis. “But it was a fenced-off, guarded Hamas base manned by terrorists,” he added. This information also cannot currently be independently verified.
