Despite the limited results of the peace summit in Switzerland in June, Ukraine wants to organize a second meeting this year, this time with Russian representatives.
Despite the Kremlin’s rejection, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has renewed his call for Russia to participate in a second peace summit this year. “I believe that representatives of Russia must be present at the second summit,” Zelensky said at a press conference in Kyiv. To this end, he expects a detailed plan to be drawn up by November to implement his so-called peace formula, which was presented in 2022 and which envisages a complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.
There will be a meeting at ministerial or advisory level in Qatar at the end of July or beginning of August on energy security, said Zelensky. There will also be talks in Turkey in August on freedom of navigation and thus food security. In addition, the exchange of prisoners and the return of children abducted by Russia will be discussed at a third meeting in Canada in August.
Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion since February 2022. In order to achieve peace, Russia is demanding that its neighbouring state cede more than a fifth of Ukraine’s territory. Ukraine should also declare itself neutral and thus renounce its accession to NATO, which has been enshrined in the constitution since 2019. In June, representatives from around 100 countries and organisations took part in a peace summit in Switzerland without Russian representatives. Three of the ten points of Zelensky’s peace plan were discussed: energy and food security and the exchange of prisoners. Moscow had described the summit as absurd.
