After the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, US President Joe Biden and his challenger want to take the edge off the election campaign. Will this succeed? The German Foreign Minister hopes for moderation.
Following the assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is counting on the election campaign in the USA to continue without violence. She welcomes “the fact that both President (Joe) Biden and Donald Trump have both called for this to be an hour of moderation and an hour of turning away from violence,” said the Green politician on the sidelines of a West African visit to the Senegalese capital Dakar in response to a reporter’s question.
“In democracies, elections are fortunately decided by the ballot and not by violence,” Baerbock added. That is why the news of the assassination attempt on Trump shocked her deeply. “Violence must never be a means of political conflict,” said the Federal Foreign Minister, adding: “Our hope must be that American democracy overcomes this dark hour. And the best way to do that is together.” She is counting on both sides to resolve the conflict democratically in fair elections and in the interests of the people.
After the assassination attempt on Trump, Biden said that the political debate in the country had become very heated. “It’s time to cool it down,” he warned. “We all have a responsibility to do that.” Violence is never a solution. Before the start of the Republican Party Convention, Trump called for overcoming the political divide in the country. The 78-year-old told the New York Post that he had scrapped his planned, very aggressive speech for the convention. “I want to try to unite the country,” he added, adding: “But I don’t know if it’s possible. People are very divided.”
