Shortly after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the American businessman Vivek Ramaswamy wrote a sentence that has stuck in my mind. Ramaswamy had originally run against Trump as a Republican, but withdrew after the Iowa caucuses. He now supports him. And how. The fact that Trump is doing well, Ramaswamy wrote, is “nothing less than an act of God.”
I read this sentence when I first read up on the events in Pennsylvania early Sunday morning. It has stuck in my mind because, as I read this kind of canonization of the presidential candidate, I found myself asking myself: Would it have been better if…?
