She was “Angie”, “Mutti”, and German Chancellor for over 16 years. Few other politicians have shaped the country as much as Angela Merkel. The physicist, who grew up in the GDR, became politically active from an early age: first in the “Democratic Awakening” (DA) party, which was formed in the wake of the collapse of the GDR regime, and then in the CDU.
There she had an unprecedented career: When the DA merged with the CDU in 1990, Merkel became a member of the Bundestag and held posts in Helmut Kohl’s cabinets as Minister for Family Affairs and Minister for the Environment (1990-1998), before taking on further positions as CDU General Secretary (1998-2000), CDU Chairwoman (2000-2018) and Leader of the Opposition (2002-2005).
As German Chancellor, she shaped the politics of the Federal Republic and the European Union for 16 years – and during this time she was undisputedly considered the most powerful woman in the world.
