Trump speaks at the closing speech at the Republican Party Convention

Donald Trump gives his speech at the crowning conclusion of the Republican Party Convention. He delivers a mixture of incitement and promises – and describes his country as a “garbage dump”.

Donald Trump has accepted his re-nomination as the Republican presidential candidate. He is running to be the president of all of America, not just half of it, he said in his speech at the end of the party convention in Milwaukee on Thursday.

“I had God on my side” – Trump reports on assassination attempt

The 78-year-old also reported on the terrifying moments of the assassination attempt on him. “I heard a loud bang and felt something hit me very, very hard on my right ear,” said the 78-year-old. “I said to myself: ‘Wow, what was that? It can only be a bullet,'” he continued. “My hand was covered in blood, blood everywhere. I knew immediately that it was very serious,” said the former president in his big speech at the finale of the convention in the state of Wisconsin.

“Blood was flowing everywhere, and yet in a way I felt very safe because I had God on my side.” If he had not looked to the side at the moment of the shot, he would no longer be alive, he stressed. “I am standing here before you, in this arena, only by the grace of Almighty God.”

His supporters cheered him wildly. Trump’s ear was still heavily bandaged. While images of him covered in blood were shown in the background, he praised the Secret Service bodyguards who had rushed to his side. “The amazing thing is that if I hadn’t moved my head at the last moment, the assassin’s bullet would have hit its target exactly and I wouldn’t be here tonight. We wouldn’t be together,” said the Republican presidential candidate. He also paid tribute to the volunteer firefighter killed in the incident.

He praised the behavior of his supporters at the event. They looked around to look for the shooter and did not panic. “They knew I was in trouble. They didn’t want to leave me. And you can see love in their faces. Incredible people,” Trump said.

Trump went into great detail and said he would only tell the story of the attack on him once. “You will not hear it from me a second time because it is actually too painful to tell.”

It was Trump’s first speech since the assassination. At the beginning he struck an unusually conciliatory tone, but Trump quickly switched to his usual style and attacked the government of US President Joe Biden. It was destroying the country, he said. Only he could save the nation from certain doom. He described the criminal proceedings against him as part of a democratic conspiracy against him.

Trump indirectly describes migrants as “trash”

Trump used his inaugural speech, among other things, to once again incite hatred against migrants and used dehumanizing language in this context. “They come from everywhere,” said the 78-year-old on the last evening of the Republican Party Convention in Milwaukee, and later: “We have become a garbage dump for the rest of the world – and they laugh at us. They think we’re stupid.”

Trump spoke for several minutes about the topic of immigration. He repeated, in almost the same words, the statements he makes during campaign appearances. He claimed, for example, that almost exclusively criminals and people from “insane asylums” enter the country via the southern border. As one of his first official acts, he wants to close the border to prevent migrants from entering the USA. “I will end the illegal immigration crisis by closing our border and completing the wall,” the 78-year-old said, adding: “We must stop the invasion of our country.”

The route to the USA via Mexico is chosen by many people who are fleeing poverty, violence and political crises in their homeland and hoping for a better life in the world’s most economically powerful country. Hundreds die every year on the dangerous route north, for example from lack of water and heat stroke, and many others fall victim to criminal gangs and sexual violence.

Migration has always been a campaign theme for Trump, but his speeches have become increasingly radical in recent years. He regularly uses hateful and dehumanizing language, makes racist statements, and incites hatred against minorities. For example, he called political opponents “vermin” and said that some immigrants are not “human” at all – or that they “poison the blood of our country.”

Trump finds few words for his vice president JD Vance

Trump only gave a few sentences to his running mate, JD Vance. “I’m very happy to have a new friend and partner fighting by my side,” said Trump. “He will be a great vice president.” The 39-year-old will be with him for a long time, “and it was an honor to select him.” Vance was a great student at the elite Yale University, as was his wife Usha. “They are two smart people,” said Trump, then quickly moved on to the next topic.

At the beginning of the party convention, Trump announced that he had chosen Vance as his vice presidential candidate. The bestselling author and lawyer was officially nominated on Monday and gave his first speech in the new role on Wednesday evening (local time). Vance presented himself as a man who comes from a humble background and addressed the working class in the so-called swing states. These are the states that are particularly contested in the election.
