He fought as a tank commander in World War II but was never honored for it. Now a 98-year-old Briton has received belated recognition.
A British veteran has been awarded medals for his service almost 80 years after the end of the Second World War. George Lewis, now 98 years old, served as a tank commander and won awards during operations in Belgium and Germany, according to a report by the British news agency PA. However, he has not yet received any medals for this.
Haven’t even thought about it anymore
The veteran, who lives with his daughter in the western English county of Somerset, was overwhelmed by the late tribute. “It’s unbelievable,” he said, according to PA.
For a long time he didn’t think about it at all and just lived his life. It only became a topic again when he recently mentioned it casually to his neighbor. Years later, his brother-in-law happened to serve in the same regiment.
“War Medal 1939-45” and “France and Germany Star”
The regiment was able to find a complete report on its deployment. “The next thing I knew, I was being presented with the medals,” Lewis recalled.
He was awarded the “War Medal 1939-45” and the “France and Germany Star”. “It’s nice to know that they respect what we have done for the people,” the senior concluded.
