The controversial nationalist Iryna Farion is buried in her hometown in western Ukraine. Shortly beforehand, the police publish clues pointing to the first lead to the murderer.
The controversial politician Iryna Farion, who was shot in the head, was buried in the western Ukrainian metropolis of Lviv amid great sympathy. At the funeral ceremony, thousands of citizens and supporters said goodbye to her in a local church, local media reported. Farion was subsequently buried in the famous Lychakivskyi Cemetery.
The police had previously released photos of the suspected murderer. They are looking for a thin man, around 20 years old, who is between 1.70 and 1.80 m tall. In the photos, the face of the suspected perpetrator is barely recognizable due to a floppy hat and sunglasses.
Farion was shot in the head in front of her house on Friday. From 2012 to 2014, the nationalist sat in parliament for the far-right party Swoboda (Freedom).
The linguist became known primarily for her harsh comments towards Russian-speaking Ukrainians, for whom she saw no place in the country. Among other things, she referred to President Volodymyr Zelensky and the world record holder in the high jump, Yaroslava Mahuchich, as “biowaste”. Zelensky, whose native language is Russian, speaks almost exclusively in Ukrainian in public.
In November last year, Farion attacked Russian-speaking soldiers, particularly representatives of the right-wing extremist movement “Azov,” calling them “cattle.” The police have not ruled out a Russian lead, however.
