Danger of war in the Middle East: Baerbock on Golan Heights: Attacks must stop immediately

At least twelve people, including children, die in a rocket attack on the Golan Heights. Foreign Minister Baerbock is appalled – and calls for action to be taken with “cool head”.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has condemned the rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that left at least twelve people dead. “It is appalling that children and young people who simply wanted to play football were killed. My condolences go out to their families,” she said on the X platform. Israeli citizens have been under fire from Hezbollah militia and other extremists for months. “The perfidious attacks must stop immediately. We must now act with cool head. Far too many people have already died in this conflict,” said the Green politician.

On Saturday, at least twelve people aged between 10 and 20 were killed in a rocket attack in the Druze town of Majd al-Shams, most of them children and teenagers. According to Israeli sources, an Iranian-made rocket from Lebanon hit a busy soccer field there. Hezbollah said in a statement that it had nothing to do with the attack. However, this was classified as false by the Israeli military. The incident sparked international fears of an escalation of violence in the region.
