One of the most important leaders of Hamas was killed in an attack in the Iranian capital. The Islamists blame Israel.
According to the Islamist terrorist organization, the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniya, was killed in an Israeli attack in the Iranian capital Tehran. Hamas said he died as a result of an attack on his residence. There was initially no confirmation of this from the Israeli side.
Hezbollah commander killed in Beirut
“This morning, Ismail Haniya’s house in Tehran was attacked, killing him and one of his bodyguards. The cause is being investigated and will be announced shortly,” said the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Hamas said Haniya was killed in a “treacherous Zionist attack on his house in Tehran.”
News of Haniya’s killing came hours after an Israeli airstrike on a suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut. According to the Israeli army, Fuad Shukr, a senior commander of the Shiite militia Hezbollah, was killed. Hezbollah is allied with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, both of which are in turn allied with Israel’s arch-enemy Iran.
One of Haniya’s bodyguards also dies
According to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, in addition to Haniya, one of his bodyguards was also killed. The cause and extent of the incident are being investigated and the results will be announced later, Iran’s elite armed forces announced early this morning.
Before his death, Haniya attended the swearing-in ceremony for the new Iranian President Massoud Peseschkian, Hamas announced on its Telegram channel. According to Iranian sources, high-ranking representatives from 86 countries attended the swearing-in ceremony. Most Western countries had neither congratulated Peseschkian on his election victory nor were their representatives on the parliament’s guest list.
Solidarity attacks from Lebanon
Since the terrorist attack by Hamas and other groups on Israel on October 7, Hezbollah has been attacking targets in northern Israel in solidarity with Hamas. It will not stop its attacks until a ceasefire is reached in Gaza.
