On September 22, Brandenburg will elect a new state parliament. The AfD is advertising with a poster that is supposed to symbolize security and protection. But this backfires.
The AfD is known for irritating and provoking. The judiciary is now looking into an election poster for the party in Brandenburg. It shows a happy-looking family – mother, father and three children. The parents are holding their arms over their offspring. “We protect your children” is the slogan above it. The gesture could symbolize a protective roof. Others see it as the forbidden Hitler salute.
The Left politician Anja Kreisel has therefore filed a complaint against the AfD politician Wilko Möller from Frankfurt (Oder).
According to Kreisel, the poster may violate the ban on using symbols of unconstitutional organizations. The district chairwoman and state parliament candidate of the Frankfurt Left sees the gesture of the couple on the election poster as a possible Hitler salute.
AfD politician rejects allegations
AfD politician Möller denies the accusation. He says the criticism is incomprehensible. “I cannot understand that this is supposed to be a Hitler salute, especially since the picture was produced by a media agency and we bought it. You have to use your imagination,” Rbb quotes him as saying. He does not know why those responsible chose this photo. The roof symbolizes security and protection. To see a Hitler salute in it is “absurd”.
According to research by the “Märkische Oderzeitung”, the image comes from a stock photo platform. Such photos can be used differently depending on the license.
Möller had most recently polarized on the 80th anniversary of the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 2024. In a video on the Tiktok platform, he called for “resistance” against the federal government. Every citizen can resist, he said, referring to the state elections on September 22, in which citizens can “put their cross in the right place.”
