Yusuf Dikec is a Turkish pistol shooter who won the silver medal in the air pistol in Paris – and in a pretty casual way. The internet is celebrating him for it.
Social media has a new hero. Yusuf Dikec, 51 years old, is a Turkish sports shooter who won the silver medal in the air pistol in the mixed team with his partner Sevval Ilayda Tarhan. This is a respectable success, but of course not enough to achieve Olympic hero status in Paris. Dikec secured this through his inimitable style at the shooting range. The pictures of his performance caused social media to explode.
Dikec’s art is to appear extremely relaxed and casual and to do without aids such as those used by the competition. The police officer does not need bulky headphones, but uses simple earplugs. He also does not use visual aids that cover one eye to be able to aim better. And then there is his posture. He stands there with one hand in his trouser pocket and an exemplary posture, not a trace of tension. A drawing in the Japanese manga style even appeared on a social media account because the user was impressed by the Turk’s posture.

Another user tweeted: “Turkey sent a 51-year-old without special lenses, eye protection or hearing protection and secured the silver medal.” The entrepreneur and richest person in the world, Elon Musk, who is omnipresent on social media, tweeted “Nice” about a photo of Dikec. Even in the pictures from the award ceremony or in a short video clip in which partner Tarhan talks about the success, the man with the gray hair looks as if nothing can upset him.
Dikec has been Turkey’s best pistol shooter for years and has a lot of competition experience. He is a multiple world and European champion. In the final over ten meters, he and his partner Tarjan lost to the Serbian duo Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec, although they were in the lead at times. Nevertheless, the silver medal is Dikec’s greatest success.
