After resignation: Nobel Prize winner to govern Bangladesh on an interim basis

He is the candidate of choice of the demonstrators and is internationally recognized. Will the country with around 170 million inhabitants find peace?

Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus is to lead a transitional government in Bangladesh. The office of President Mohammed Shahabuddin confirmed this to the German Press Agency. The official appointment has not yet been made. Yunus is ready to take on the office, the BBC Bangla quoted a spokeswoman for the Nobel Prize winner as saying.

Only on Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has recently been ruling in an increasingly autocratic manner, fled the country after mass protests.

The 84-year-old Yunus is to remain in power until a new election is held. It is not yet clear when this will take place. Yunus is the person the demonstrators want for the job, said student leader Nahid Islam. There have been demonstrations and unrest in the South Asian country in recent weeks.
