In June, a Polish man beat Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in the street in Copenhagen. The verdict has now been handed down.
A Danish court has sentenced a Polish citizen to four months in prison for hitting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in June. The 39-year-old will also be expelled from Denmark once he has served his sentence. This was the decision of the Copenhagen District Court.
The man punched Frederiksen in the upper arm in downtown Copenhagen on June 7, when the Prime Minister was on her way to have coffee with a friend. Frederiksen suffered a slight whiplash injury. She canceled several appointments in the days following the attack. Frederiksen’s friend testified in court that the Prime Minister was “visibly shaken” after the attack.
Was drunk and had a bad day
The Polish man, who has been living in Denmark for five years, denied hitting Frederiksen. In court, he said he had had a bad day on June 7, according to the Ritzau news agency. Both witnesses and the man said he was drunk that day.
In addition to the conviction for violence against a state employee, the 39-year-old was also convicted of one count of sexual harassment, three counts of exhibitionism and of defrauding two supermarkets of small amounts of money. After his deportation, the man is not allowed to enter Denmark for six years.
