Russian military flights are closely monitored, even if they do not violate NATO airspace. There are alert launches from three directions over the Baltic Sea to identify a reconnaissance aircraft.
A Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea region has brought fighter planes from several NATO countries into action. To secure the airspace of the alliance area, interceptors from alert squadrons from Rostock-Laage, from Sweden and from the NATO Air Policing Baltic mission took off and accompanied the Russian maritime reconnaissance aircraft IL-20M, the German Air Force announced on Saturday on the short message service X. “The aircraft flew without a flight plan and without contact with civil air traffic control,” it continued.
In accordance with applicable aviation law, Russia also uses international airspace for military flights. According to previous information from the German Armed Forces, Russian military aircraft almost always fly without an identification signal (“transponder”), which makes them invisible to civil air traffic control. During these flights, these aircraft come close to NATO airspace without violating it. It is assumed that this is also a test of the reaction to such flights.
