No incidents: Tens of thousands celebrate at Rainbow Parade in Prague

It was a peaceful and colorful celebration. The queer scene wanted to show that family can have other forms than the traditional one.

As the highlight of the “Prague Pride Festival 2024” week of events, tens of thousands of people marched through Prague’s city center in a colorful parade. The organizers estimated the number of participants in the largest event of the Czech LGBTIQ scene at 60,000, the CTK news agency reported. Several Czech politicians and foreign diplomats also took part.

A police spokesman said that for security reasons, more police officers were monitoring the Rainbow Parade this time than in previous years. He said the reason was that there had been terror warnings at a similar parade in Bratislava in neighboring Slovakia at the end of July. As in Bratislava, however, there were no major incidents in Prague, apart from minor disruptions caused by insults shouted by opponents of the queer scene on the side of the road.

A whole week dedicated to LGBTIQ

The week-long festival, which began on Monday, continues in the evening with a concert program on the Letna festival grounds, located on a hill above the city center, and ends with smaller cultural events on Sunday. The entire festival’s motto is “family.”

According to the organizers, the aim is to show that, in addition to the traditional heterosexual, other forms of living together can also be a family. The abbreviation LGBTIQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, intersex and queer.
