Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wants to tighten gun laws. The reason: an increase in knife attacks. Her benchmark: a fruit knife.
Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser has further explained the tightening of gun laws that she is seeking to implement when it comes to handling knives. From her point of view, it is not clear why anyone would carry a knife with a blade longer than six centimeters, said the SPD politician after a visit to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Cologne. At the same time, she said: “Six centimeters is OK. That’s a small fruit knife if you’re out and about somewhere and want to have a picnic.” But you don’t “need” more than that.
It was announced at the weekend that Faeser wants to tighten gun laws in response to an increase in knife attacks. In public, knives with blades of up to six centimeters long will now be allowed, instead of the current twelve centimeters. She wants to create a general ban on dangerous switchblades, she told “Bild am Sonntag”. The corresponding changes to gun laws will be presented shortly.
In addition to a change in gun laws, there is also a need for stricter controls, said Faeser in Cologne. “Weapons and knife ban zones can and should be imposed by local authorities,” she said. During the European Football Championship, local authorities were already asked to impose gun ban zones. “But that is an appeal. It can’t be more than that in my view. I can’t order that,” said Faeser.
Faeser also said that there will of course be exceptions. “If you buy a large kitchen knife now, then it is of course covered by exceptions,” she said.
