Ukraine stresses that it is adhering to international humanitarian law during its ground offensive in Russia. Meanwhile, the authorities in the Kursk region are ordering more and more evacuations.
In the Russian region of Kursk, which is partly controlled by Ukrainian troops, the authorities have ordered the evacuation of another district. The people in the Glushkovsky district are to be brought to safety, said Governor Alexei Smirnov. Before the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, more than 17,500 residents were registered in the district, which is about ten kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Smirnov also reported another air raid warning in the Kursk region this morning due to the threat of rocket attacks from the Ukrainian side.
“Dear compatriots, I ask you to react to the current situation with understanding and to follow all recommendations of the security forces and local authorities,” said Smirnov. The Glushkovsky district is about 150 kilometers from the regional capital Kursk. Smirnov called on people in other regions with air raid warnings to seek safety in shelters – or in rooms without windows.
According to Smirnov, more than 120,000 people have now been brought to safety. Russia has declared its border regions of Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk zones for anti-terrorist operations, meaning the military apparatus is deploying more personnel and resources. In the Belgorod region, Moscow has upgraded the state of emergency to an emergency of national importance, as it did previously in the Kursk area.
Selenskyj: Kyiv troops respect humanitarian law
According to reports from Russian military bloggers, there are heavy battles between Moscow and Kiev’s troops in parts of the Kursk region. Ukraine launched a ground offensive on Russian territory on August 6 – for the first time as part of its defensive struggle against the Russian war of aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that Kiev’s soldiers in the Russian territory were adhering to international humanitarian law.
Kiev had also reported progress in the offensive the day before. The information cannot be independently verified. According to Russian military sources, around 12,000 Ukrainian soldiers, including mercenaries, are said to have invaded the area. There is no confirmation of this from Kiev.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine wants to use the offensive to increase pressure on its war opponent Russia to end the fighting and begin peace negotiations. In contrast, Russian troops reported the capture of further towns in the Ukrainian region of Donetsk.
