Two weeks ago, Vladimir Kara-Murza was released in a large-scale prisoner exchange between Russia and the West. Now he is in the USA – and is being welcomed at the highest level.
US President Joe Biden has received Kremlin opponent Vladimir Kara-Murza, who was released from Russian captivity, in Washington. The White House announced that Biden met the opposition figure and his family at the US government headquarters to welcome him to the United States.
Kara-Mursa is one of more than 20 prisoners who were released two weeks ago in an unprecedented prisoner exchange between Russia and the United States, Germany and other Western countries. Among them were several US citizens.
Kara-Mursa is not an American, but he has a green card, which is a permanent residence permit in the USA. After his release, he first traveled to Germany.
The 42-year-old is one of the most prominent opposition figures in Russia. He was sentenced to 25 years in a prison camp in April 2023 on charges of high treason.
