Bremen: AfD fails in lawsuit against state election

The AfD had submitted two lists of candidates for the Bremen state election and was subsequently not allowed to stand. Despite a lawsuit, the election result stood.

The May 2023 state election in Bremen is valid. This was announced by the State Court of the Free Hanseatic City. The exclusion of the AfD from the election was therefore legal, as the presiding judge said in his justification. No electoral errors were apparent. The court thus rejected various complaints against the validity of the election. The verdict is not subject to appeal.

Several AfD members had taken action against the election because the party was not allowed to stand in the election. The AfD was so divided at the time that two state executive committees had submitted proposals with candidates. However, only one list per party is permitted.

AfD exclusion in Bremen legal

The electoral review court ruled in December that the exclusion of the AfD was legal. The party members did not accept the decision and appealed to the next level. Since the beginning of July, the State Court has been dealing with the complaints, separately for the Bremen and Bremerhaven electoral districts.

The red-green-red government has been in office for more than a year. In the election for the Bremen state parliament on May 14, 2023, the SPD under Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte became the strongest force.
