Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it wants to destroy Russia’s Crimean bridge as soon as it has the military means to do so. Now new attempts are said to have failed.
According to Russian sources, Ukraine has again attempted to destroy the bridge to the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which has been annexed by Moscow. The Russian air defense system destroyed twelve ATACMS missiles approaching the bridge, the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow announced. The ministry did not publish any evidence of this. The information cannot be independently verified. However, Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it wants to destroy the bridge as soon as it has the military means to do so, because the structure was built illegally.
The bridge is considered one of the best-secured Russian structures, having been the target of several attacks and damaged in the past. The Russian military has also been alarmed since German air force officers spoke in a conversation intercepted by Moscow about how many cruise missiles would be needed to destroy the viaduct.
For Russia, the bridge is the most important connection to Crimea, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers in the summer. Rail and car traffic on the bridge is repeatedly temporarily suspended when air raid warnings are issued.
The Defense Ministry in Moscow again reported several repelled attacks by Ukrainian air and sea drones on Crimea. According to authorities, however, there was no damage. The Ukrainian side initially provided no information on the attacks on the peninsula.
