The Left Party leaders Janine Wissler and Martin Schirdewan have announced their resignation. They will not run for the chairmanship again at the party conference in October, both announced on Sunday. They announced their decision at a meeting of the party executive committee.
“I did not make this decision lightly and spent a long time considering what makes sense in this situation,” explained Wissler. “I notice that there is a desire in parts of the party for a fresh start in terms of personnel.” The Left now has enough time until the party conference in mid-October “for a transparent process and an internal party opinion-forming process on candidacies.”
The left needs renewal
Schirdewan also explained that the decision was not an easy one for him. It had “matured in me after careful consideration over the past few weeks.” He was of the opinion “that our party needs new perspectives and passion in the current situation in order to drive forward the necessary renewal,” Schirdewan added.
Wissler has been at the head of the Left Party since February 2021, initially together with Susanne Hennig-Wellsow. Schirdewan took over the co-chairmanship in June 2022.
