The reports of knife attacks are apparently causing fear. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser now wants to tighten gun laws and is receiving a lot of support for this.
The number of knife attacks is increasing. However, the Federal Criminal Police Office has only been collecting the relevant statistics for a few years, so experts are arguing about their significance. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) has now proposed that only knives with blades of up to six centimeters long should be permitted to be carried in public; previously, the limit was twelve centimeters. In addition, switchblades should be banned altogether.
83 percent in favor of measures against knife attacks
The majority of Germans are in favor of tightening gun laws, as proposed by Faeser. 82 percent would agree with restrictions on carrying and carrying long knives, according to a Forsa survey for Stern. 16 percent would disagree with restrictions. 2 percent did not express an opinion.
The plans are supported across all social groups and by supporters of all parties. 86 percent of Union voters are in favor, 85 percent of SPD and Green voters, 80 percent of AfD voters, 79 percent of FDP voters and 76 percent of Sahra Wagenknecht’s coalition. At 21 percent, the proportion of those opposed to tightening the rules is only slightly higher among FDP voters.
