Russian air strikes: Poland documents possible Russian airspace violation

During massive Russian air strikes, Polish radar detects a suspicious flying object. It appears to have entered Polish airspace from the vicinity of a Ukrainian power plant.

In connection with the Russian attacks on Ukraine, an undefined “flying object” apparently entered Polish territory and was detected by Polish radar. This was announced by General Maciej Klisz, the operational commander of the Polish army, in Warsaw. The PAP news agency subsequently quoted Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk as assuring that there was no immediate danger to Poland’s population.

At least three radar stations had detected the presumably unmanned object, Klisz said at a press briefing. It was “fully under control” and could have been shot down if necessary. The object crossed the Polish border near the Ukrainian city of Chervonohrad at 6:43 a.m. Chervonohrad has been the repeated target of Russian air strikes because of a power plant located there.

Polish soldiers search for missing drone

Around 70 soldiers searched the eastern Polish municipality of Tyszowce in the afternoon for the possibly crashed aircraft. The area is about 20 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The flight path, altitude and speed of the object suggest that it was a Russian Shahed combat drone of Iranian design, a lieutenant colonel told the PAP agency. It is less likely that it was a missile.

Already in the morning, PAP had reported that the Polish military had launched interceptors due to the proximity of massive Russian air strikes to the Polish border. According to the information, aircraft from other allies were also involved in the operation. Russian missiles have violated Polish airspace several times during attacks on Ukraine. In 2022, two people were killed when a missile crashed in eastern Poland. In that case, the cause was a misdirected Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile.
