Thuringia’s AfD top candidate Björn Höcke cancelled his participation in a TV round on Wednesday. One day later he was back on stage. What happened?
After a cancelled TV round, Thuringia’s AfD top candidate Björn Höcke appeared at an election campaign event in Nordhausen. “Friends, I am alive and kicking”said Höcke in front of several hundred spectators in the northern Thuringian city. He had recovered from a virus, he said, and stressed several times that he was in top shape. “If I get on a racing bike here and now, I will reach the Brocken in under three hours”he said. The Brocken in the Harz Mountains is the highest mountain in Saxony-Anhalt at 1,141 metres.
Höcke said it was a virus that forced him to stay close to sanitary facilities. In his speech, the 52-year-old criticized the media and claimed that democracy no longer works.
Björn Höcke with “with health problems”
On Wednesday, Höcke cancelled his participation in a discussion round hosted by ntv and Antenne Thüringen. His spokespersons initially only cited health problems as the reason for this. Thuringia’s AfD co-leader Stefan Möller took part in the round instead and said: “All I found out was that he couldn’t sleep last night.”
The press spokesman for the Thuringian AfD, Torben Braga, had already announced before the broadcast that Höcke would have recovered by Thursday. According to ntv, Höcke had already cancelled his participation on Monday, confirmed his participation again on Tuesday and then finally cancelled on Wednesday morning.
