It is the first TV interview with US Vice President Harris since her nomination as a candidate. She is also asked about a statement made by Trump regarding her identity as a black American.
Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris has described Donald Trump’s statements about her identity as a black American as “the same old, stale ploy.” When asked about Trump’s accusation that she had only recently started identifying as a black American for political reasons, Harris accused the Republican presidential candidate of old-fashioned thinking in an interview with CNN. Some critics had viewed Trump’s statements as racist.
She simply said that Trump’s approach was “the same old, stale ploy.” “Next question, please,” said the 59-year-old – and laughed. When moderator Dana Bash asked her if she really didn’t want to say anything more on the subject, Harris said: “That’s it.” The conversation was the first TV interview since Harris was nominated as a candidate.
Harris is the first woman, the first black person and the first Asian American to be sworn in as US Vice President. She was born in Oakland, California. Her father immigrated to the US from Jamaica to study economics. Her mother came from India.
A few weeks ago, former President Trump said of Harris: “She was always of Indian descent and only advertised her Indian descent.” He continued: “I didn’t know she was black until she suddenly became black a few years ago. And now she wants to be known as black.”
