Migration: France’s coast guard rescues 223 migrants from the English Channel

Migrants continue to attempt to cross the English Channel to reach Great Britain in large numbers. Smugglers often put far too many people into small boats, which then end up in distress at sea.

France’s coast guard rescued 223 migrants from distress in the English Channel within 48 hours. Several of the small boats, mostly overloaded with migrants, ran into problems on the way to Great Britain, the maritime prefecture said. Rescue ships brought the shipwrecked people to the northern French ports of Boulogne and Dunkirk.

Some of the migrants were already floating in the water or trapped on sandbanks by the floods. Others refused help from the coast guard because they wanted to continue the dangerous crossing in any case to reach their destination.

Starmer last spoke to Macron a few days ago about the issue

Migrants repeatedly cross the English Channel to reach Great Britain. They often make the journey in small rubber dinghies. The crossing is dangerous, not least because the channel is used by many large ships. People often lose their lives during the crossings.

Britain has been trying to curb migration across the English Channel for some time, also with French help, and is paying millions to France for this purpose. The new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer last discussed the issue with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday.
