Medical practices in Germany had to cope with significantly higher costs in 2022. Although they were also able to enjoy increased revenue, many of them ended up with less money left over.
The costs of medical practices in Germany rose sharply in 2022. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the average expenses per medical practice increased by eleven percent to 466,000 euros. In the previous year, 2021, the figure was still 420,000 euros. At the same time, average income also rose – but less sharply, so that the net income per practice fell on average.
Average revenue per practice increased by 5.3 percent to 796,000 euros (2021: 756,000). Net income per practice averaged 331,000 euros in 2022. This is 1.5 percent less than in the previous year (336,000 euros).
According to the Federal Office, medical practices include individual practices, group practices and medical care centers. Dental practices and psychotherapy practices are excluded.
The net income is not the same as the profit or income of the doctors, explained the statisticians. It represents the result of the entire practice’s financial year, but does not take into account, for example, the expenses for taking over practices or the costs of the practice owners’ pension or health insurance.
Net income also falls for dentists
As in medical practices, average net income also fell in dental practices and psychotherapy practices in 2022: Dental practices had almost unchanged average income of 790,000 euros per practice compared to the previous year (2021: 791,000 euros) and expenses that were 7.1 percent higher. According to the Federal Office, this led to a decline in net income per practice of 13.5 percent to 243,000 euros (2021: 281,000 euros).
Psychotherapeutic practices, which are significantly smaller than medical or dental practices with an average of around two people working there, achieved slightly increased average revenues of 128,000 euros in 2022 (2021: 127,000 euros). However, their costs rose significantly, by 11.1 percent compared to the previous year. Net income fell accordingly by 3.3 percent to 88,000 euros per practice (2021: 91,000 euros).
