The result of the election in Thuringia and Saxony is not making things easy for the parties. The Thuringian CDU has cleared the way for talks with Wagenknecht’s party. But there is also rejection.
Resistance in the CDU against a possible coalition with the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance after the state elections in Thuringia and Saxony is growing. “Sahra Wagenknecht contradicts everything that the Union parties have stood for since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany: clear ties to the West, a united Europe and membership in NATO as the greatest peace project in history,” said North Rhine-Westphalian Christian Democrat Frank Sarfeld to the “Tagesspiegel”.
“Like the AfD, the BSW is also turning to authoritarian systems. There must be no cooperation with such groups.” According to the newspaper, Sarfeld is speaking for a group of around 40 CDU members who are demanding that the next federal party conference pass a resolution declaring them incompatible with the BSW.
So far, an incompatibility resolution by the CDU only prohibits cooperation with the AfD or the Left. After the complicated result of the state election, the Thuringian CDU executive board voted on Monday for initial talks with the BSW.
Radtke: “The CDU is heading towards an abyss”
According to the “Tagesspiegel”, the group of CDU MPs also includes foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter and social policy expert Dennis Radtke.
MEP Radtke told the newspaper: “Every political actor knows what the BSW stands for in terms of content – namely against elementary Christian Democratic beliefs such as Western ties, liberal democracy and European unification.” AfD and BSW wanted to destroy the CDU “because we are the last bastion of the political center.” “The CDU is heading for an abyss if we allow ourselves to be harnessed to Sahra Wagenknecht’s cart.”
Kiesewetter expressed himself similarly: “The BSW wants to undermine the democratic centre, including the Union as a people’s party, and undermine our basic values, which is why cooperation should be ruled out.” The inclusion in an incompatibility resolution is therefore foreseeable for him, said the Bundestag member.
