Wisconsin: Why a small town is a role model for the divided USA

The town of Harmony in Wisconsin has a solution to America’s divisions. Visit a place whose residents don’t want to get at each other’s throats despite their different party preferences.

If the American dream still exists in 2024, it will probably be in a place like Harmony, Wisconsin, population 2,575.

The single-family homes in Harmony resemble villas and are arranged symmetrically, as if on a drawing board. The lawns appear manicured and as immaculate as the cornfields on the outskirts of town. The churches are larger than warehouses and the tallest building is not a factory or a residential building, but a huge white cross.

At the entrance to the town, a huge billboard greets residents: “Welcome back to school.” And underneath – like a reminder: “Welcome back to church.”

It is now clear: This is the “Heartland”, the heart of America.
