The Sumy region near the border is repeatedly the target of Russian attacks. Authorities are now reporting more deaths and injuries – as well as air strikes in other parts of the country.
In a new Russian air strike against Ukraine, at least two people were killed and four others injured in the city of Sumy in the north-east of the country. Among the injured were a two-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy, Ukrainian authorities said. The dead were an elderly couple. The house of the 79 and 77-year-old couple was destroyed in the nighttime attack, they said.
The city and region of Sumy in Russia’s neighborhood are repeatedly the target of attacks in the war of aggression against Ukraine that has been going on for more than two and a half years.
This morning, the Ukrainian air defense reported that it had again repelled numerous Russian strikes. According to the report, the air defense destroyed 15 of 23 drones and one of four missiles. The regions affected were Odessa, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk.
Selenskyj: Russia fired more than 800 glide bombs
Ukraine is demanding more air defense systems and missiles from the West in order to be able to better protect itself from Russian air attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported this morning that Russia had fired more than 800 glide bombs, almost 300 drones and more than 60 rockets and cruise missiles against the country in the past week alone.
“Terrorism can only be reliably stopped in one way: by attacking Russian military airports, their bases and the logistics of Russian terror,” Zelenskyj said on X. “We must achieve this,” he wrote. Zelenskyj recently demanded in Germany and Italy that the West give Ukraine long-range weapons to destroy targets on Russian territory. So far, Ukraine has been subject to restrictions on the use of Western weapons against Russia.
In Italy, Zelenskyi also spoke of the goal of making Ukraine less dependent on arms supplies from abroad. “We are setting up underground weapons production facilities so that Ukrainian soldiers can defend themselves, even if supplies from our other partners are delayed,” Zelenskyi said during a lecture in Cernobbio in northern Italy. Ukraine has developed its “own new drones and missiles,” and is ready to bring this war back to Russia to put pressure on Putin.
