As a member of the Swiss Guard, Frowin Bachmann was jointly responsible for the Pope’s security for 31 years. He traveled with him around the world – and lived right by his side.
The Swiss Frowin Bachmann has quick, alert eyes, his hair is cut military-style short, and his wiry body is always on the move. The 59-year-old served in the Vatican for 31 years; hardly any non-priest had as much insight into the lives of the popes as he did.
At the very beginning, he had actually only wanted to commit himself for two years.
“I grew up in a Catholic family in the village of Freienbach in the canton of Schwyz and did an apprenticeship as a banker. Now I wanted to see the world. And learn foreign languages,” says Bachmann. He discovered the article “Learning Italian in the service of the Pope” in a newspaper – and jumped at the chance. The then 20-year-old applied and received a call from the Swiss Guard to Rome a year later.
