The Union has declared the migration talks with the government a failure because the traffic light plans are not sufficient. Chancellor Scholz then took the CDU leader to task personally.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has personally and sharply criticized CDU leader Friedrich Merz for breaking off migration talks with the traffic light coalition. At the summer party of the conservative Seeheimer Circle of the SPD in Berlin, the Chancellor accused the Union parliamentary group leader of irresponsibility and lack of leadership in the evening.
“It was already clear beforehand that we would leave this round. And that is embarrassing for those who are responsible for it,” said the Chancellor in an emotional speech to the Seeheim residents. “Leadership looks different. Character, honesty and firmness are what this country needs. And not such small sleight of hand and provincial stage acting,” said Scholz.
Leadership means not running away. “And leadership means being able to make compromises. But you have to want to do that.
CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz declared the talks with the traffic light government had failed. The coalition obviously does not see itself in a position to accept comprehensive rejections at Germany’s borders, said the CDU chairman. “The attempt to go down a common path has therefore failed,” he added.
“Massive turnaround” in migration policy
The Federal Government will now implement what it has proposed, the Chancellor continued. “We have initiated a massive turnaround in the effective handling of irregular migration in Germany. And that was the right thing to do.” This can be seen, for example, in the reduced number of people entering the country irregularly and the massive increase in the number of deportations.
Scholz referred to the traffic light coalition’s security package, which was agreed within a few days after the knife attack in Solingen and which is to be discussed in the Bundestag in first reading on Thursday. It provides for measures for a tougher approach to the return of rejected asylum seekers to their countries of origin, steps to combat Islamist terror more decisively and tightening of gun laws. “We are acting, we are not just talking,” the head of government made clear.
On Wednesday, there will be a direct debate between Merz and Scholz in the Bundestag. In the general debate as part of the budget discussions, the leader of the largest opposition faction, Merz, usually speaks first. Then it is the Chancellor’s turn.
