Universities: Colleges are hiring more staff

At the end of last year, German universities had over 790,000 employees. Many of them work on fixed-term contracts, part-time or on a part-time basis.

The number of employees at German universities and university hospitals rose slightly last year to around 792,300. This is 0.6 percent more than at the end of 2022, according to the Federal Statistical Office. In non-scientific areas such as administration, libraries, technical services and nursing services, 2.1 percent more people were employed. In the scientific sector, however, the number of employees fell slightly by 0.6 percent.

Statistically, there was one teacher for 6.7 students, while the ratio in the previous year was 6.8. The reason for the positive development despite the lower number of employees in the academic sector is, according to the information, that there were also fewer students.

At the end of 2023, one third (34 percent) of academic university staff worked part-time as visiting professors, lecturers or research assistants.

Many fixed-term contracts

According to the information, the full-time staff in the academic sector included around 51,900 professors and around 214,900 scientific and artistic staff. Two thirds (66 percent) of the employees in this sector had a fixed-term contract, 39 percent had a part-time position.
