War in Ukraine: Power outages after Russian drone attacks in Sumy

During the night, Russia again deployed combat drones against targets in Ukraine. Most of these are said to have been rendered harmless. Nevertheless, there were power outages in northeastern Ukraine.

There have been power outages in the north-eastern Ukrainian region of Sumy following Russian drone attacks. The regional capital of Sumy was among those affected, the local electricity supplier said on Telegram. Despite ongoing repair work, more than 280,000 households were still without electricity in the morning.

According to authorities, critical infrastructure facilities such as hospitals and waterworks are supplied with electricity via reserve lines. According to reports, 16 Russian combat drones were shot down over the Sumy region. The area borders the contested Russian region of Kursk, which Ukrainian troops entered in early August.

According to Ukrainian sources, the Russian military deployed at least 51 combat drones against targets in Ukraine during the night. Ukrainian air defenses claim to have shot down 34 of them. Twelve other Russian drones were knocked off course using electronic means and brought down. There was no information about damage or casualties. In addition, two drones are said to have returned to Russian airspace. This information cannot be independently verified.

Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for over two and a half years. Russia and Ukraine regularly use combat drones.
