Friedrich Merz does it, then everything is sorted – right? As a candidate for chancellor, despite his lead in the polls, he still has to solve a few problems if he wants to cross the finish line as the winner.
Unresolved conflicts
The Union’s candidacy for chancellor may have been decided in favor of the CDU leader, but the party executives of the CDU and CSU still have to formally agree on Monday. There are good reasons for his nomination: Friedrich Merz has brought opposition back to the so-called chancellor election club after 16 years in government, sharpened the CDU’s profile with a new policy program and thus made it a powerful competitor to the traffic light coalition. However, many conflicts within the Union are unresolved and could still slow Merz down on his way to the chancellorship.
