Pagers explode in the pockets of thousands of Hezbollah members in Lebanon. The Mossad appears to be behind it. What will follow the surprise attack? Questions for Middle East expert Paul Salem.
Mr. Salem, thousands of manipulated pagers of the terrorist militia Hezbollah went off almost simultaneously across Lebanon on Tuesday afternoon. Were we witnessing perhaps the most sophisticated cyber attack in history?
According to what we currently know, these pagers were delivered to Hezbollah from Taiwan a few months ago, intercepted beforehand and rigged with explosives. (Editor’s note: According to the manufacturer’s latest information, the pagers were produced in Hungary.) From a purely technical point of view, this is not a very sophisticated attack, but it is certainly a very bold one. Perhaps one could say that it was the cyber strike that had the greatest physical impact on a combat zone to date.
