In view of the increasing number of natural disasters and cyber attacks, the challenges for civil protection are growing. The federal and state governments have raised awareness of this at an action day in Wiesbaden.
Around 30 actors from fire, civil and disaster protection presented themselves at the second “Day of Civil Protection” in Wiesbaden. This year, the State of Hesse and the Federal Government organized the action day under the motto “Participate. Contribute” in Wiesbaden. At the nationwide central event for Civil Protection Day in the state capital, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) called for a new awareness of civil protection and care in crisis situations.
Germany needs to deal with population and civil protection differently, she said. Both are playing a particularly important role these days in light of the terrible floods that have caused many deaths in the neighboring countries of Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria. “We are noticing the effects of climate change, the changes in disasters,” she said. “We need to position ourselves differently.” That is why the federal government launched Civil Protection Day two years ago.
Faeser thanked the exhibitors for their commitment and emphasized that 90 percent of disaster relief and civil protection in Germany is carried out on a voluntary basis. “That is something very special across Europe,” she said. It is no small thing to risk one’s own life for others in addition to one’s job and family. “That deserves our utmost respect.”
Hesse’s Interior Minister urges respect for emergency services
“Volunteering is indispensable,” emphasized Hesse’s Interior Minister Roman Poseck. “Without the many volunteers, we would not be able to manage all of this, we would not be able to guarantee civil protection,” said the CDU politician, urging respect for emergency services. Something must be done to counter attacks on them.
According to the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), the main concerns of the Civil Protection Day were to prepare well for crises, to strengthen the resilience of the population and state structures, and to support volunteers. Interested citizens were able to find out about civil protection issues in Wiesbaden city center and to get actively involved. The partners involved rated the second joint Civil Protection Day as a great success, the BKK announced.
