Glide bombs are a nightmare for cities near the front in Ukraine. Kharkiv is suffering the most from them. Now Russia is bombarding another city with these weapons.
According to local authorities, 16 people were injured in a Russian air raid on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia. According to Ukrainian media reports, it was the first time that the city was bombarded with so-called glide bombs. 13 residential buildings, 2 kindergartens and several cars were damaged in the nighttime attack, Ukrainian police said.
Glide bombs are dropped by Russian fighter jets near the front and then guided to their target over dozens of kilometers. Such bombs, containing several hundred kilograms of explosives, have already caused serious damage in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv and elsewhere. In order to prevent these attacks, Ukraine is asking to be allowed to use Western weapons against Russian air bases near the front.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia also deployed four combat drones during the night. Three of them were shot down. The Ukrainian regional capital Zaporizhia had 760,000 inhabitants before the war. It is located about 60 kilometers as the crow flies from the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant of the same name, which is occupied by the Russian military.
