Border controls: Police union sees little effect

How do the new border controls help to curb illegal migration? According to the police union GdP, little. There is also no deterrent effect.

According to the police union (GdP), the new border controls have so far done little to limit illegal migration. “It remains to be seen that the number of people catching illegal immigrants and people smugglers is relatively low,” said GdP chairman Andreas Roßkopf to the editorial network Germany. As a result, there have only been a small number of rejections at the western border.

New border controls: Police see no effect – and criticize equipment

Since last week, checks have been carried out at all German borders to reduce the number of people entering the country illegally. New checks are at the land borders with Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Checks have been in place at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland for some time, and there were also checks at the border with France because of the Olympic Games. The measure is initially limited to six months.

Roßkopf said that checkpoints and main roads have simply been avoided since the measure began. The police also lack the equipment to be able to work as a modern police force. “The failures in this area in recent years are now coming back to haunt us.”

There is also no evidence of a deterrent effect from the measures so far. “The number of people being referred for protection and asylum to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in the interior of the country remains high,” said Roßkopf.
