Action by climate activists: Finnish Riksdag sprayed with blood-red paint

In Finland and Sweden, peat is still mined for fuel today. This is a thorn in the side of climate activists. In front of the parliament in Helsinki, they therefore resort to fire extinguishers with spray paint.

Climate activists have defaced the Finnish Parliament in Helsinki with blood-red paint. The paint was sprayed on several central pillars of the imposing parliament building, and it was also visible at the main entrance and on the steps in front of it. According to police, ten people who remained sitting on the steps of the building after the action were arrested. A cleaner set to work removing the paint with a high-pressure cleaner.

The climate protection organizations Elokapina from Finland and Återställ Våtmarker from Sweden were responsible for the action. They published a video showing how they spray the paint onto the pillars using fire extinguishers.

The activists wanted to use the action to protest against the destruction of important wetlands and against the mining of peat, which is still used as a fossil fuel in countries such as Finland and Sweden. Elokapina criticized the fact that although the Finnish government wants to halve peat consumption in its own country by 2030, at the same time a Finnish state-owned company in neighboring Sweden is responsible for more than 70 percent of peat production.
