After the construction of the Intel chip factory in Magdeburg was halted, billions of dollars suddenly became available in the budget. What happens to the money now?
The leaders of the traffic light coalition want to discuss the use of the billions in funding released for the chip company Intel this afternoon. According to government sources, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) are meeting in Berlin. The Handelsblatt was the first to report on this.
Intel wants to build a factory in Magdeburg, but announced a few days ago that it would postpone the project by at least two years. The federal government wanted to support the investment with 9.9 billion euros. There are different ideas within the governing coalition about what should be done with the money that is not needed for the time being. Lindner wants to use the funds to reduce the financing gaps in the core budget, while Habeck is in favor of keeping the money in the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF) and using it, for example, to relieve the crisis-ridden industry.
