Justin Trudeau has seen better days. His poll ratings are in the basement and now the Conservative Party wants to withdraw its confidence in him – but for now it has failed.
Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has survived a vote of no confidence brought by the Conservative Party in Parliament. Members of parliament from two other parties – the New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Bloc Québécois – voted against the motion as previously announced, meaning it did not pass. The Conservatives have, however, announced further motions of this kind – if one of them passes, it would trigger new elections.
Trudeau, who has been in power since 2015, has been struggling with poor poll ratings for years. His star as a political superstar has fallen significantly in recent years. Although he is credited with leading Canada into the political future on issues such as reconciliation with indigenous peoples, feminism, the climate crisis and abortion rights, scandals such as suppressed corruption investigations have dented his image.
Most recently, the NDP also withdrew its support for his minority government, but for the time being it still did not want to join the vote of no confidence. The next election is scheduled to take place in autumn 2025 at the latest. Currently, many see the conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre as the most likely winner.
